英国王立演劇アカデミー（RADA）で学んだあと、「COMMON STOCK」や「テアトル・ド・コンプリシテ」などのカンパニーに参加。独特の身体表現による演技に定評があり、1991年にはコンプリシテ『貴婦人故郷に帰る』（デュレンマット作）の主演で、イギリスでもっとも権威ある演劇賞、ローレンス・オリヴィエ賞（最優秀女優賞）を受賞。その後も『リア王』『リチャード三世』タイトルロールからフィジカルシアターまで幅広いキャリアを重ねるほか、演出家としても活躍。2011年にはピーター・ブルック演出『フラグメンツ』のワールド・ツアーに参加している。野田秀樹『THE BEE』（2006、2007年）『THE DIVER』（2008年）出演で、日本でも高い評価を得ている。
